I have been following all the letters about emigration. It is interesting to see different views since I am an emigrant myself who will have my citizenship changed soon. I am in my 20s and have traveled to all continents and lived in different countries in Asia, and North America and am currently in Europe.
I would like to stress that we are all independent individuals, and migrating is a personal choice which should not be condemned. We live in a free society and everyone's personal liberty should be respected.
I left because I am not bumiputera and I disagree with constitutional discrimination. Also, there is a world out there waiting for me to explore. If emigrants are labeled as traitors , what about corrupt business people and politicians who remain in the country?
I read in several letters that we should be 'grateful' to the country that fed, sheltered and educated us. But think about it - it is our own salary that provides food and shelter while other social services and infrastructure etc. are financed by taxes - again, which we contribute to.
If brain drain is such a serious threat, Malaysia should be more flexible in its immigration policy and start accepting immigrants. I think some professionals from other poorer countries may be attracted to move to Malaysia.
