I refer to the letter Hidden hand behind Sudan genocide claim .

Who is the author trying to fool? It has become clear to the world that the United States has invaded Iraq under false premises. However, as intuitively one may assume that oil was the primary reason for invading Iraq, one should not disqualify the possibility that invading Iraq holds the potential to generate long-term benefits to the Middle East in the form of democracy, justice, good governance and better standard of living for all the Iraqis.

To link the international 'fuss' over Darfur with the war in Iraq is irresponsible, insensitive and most likely, politically motivated. Approximately 7,000 people die monthly in Darfur. Over 450,000 people have been killed and over four million others are considered 'conflict-affected' by the UN. Does this sound like the 'fuss' in the United States over Sudan is about oil? Clearly not!

The typical argument of those Arab Muslim minority elite in power in Khartoum is that conflicts around the country stem from historical tribal rivalries. This argument no longer holds water. People throughout Sudan (outside Khartoum) are oppressed through class, race, and the imposition of religion. This enables Khartoum's Arab Muslim elite minority to justify their upper hand over the political system and distribution of wealth in the country.

In other words, the source of conflict in Sudan is the population in the center, the priviledged minority, who continue to exploit the wealth of those outside Khartoum while keeping those in the peripheries socially, politically and economically marginalised.

This practice, which is in fact historical, is the true source of armed struggle throughout Sudan. Hence, it is the unfairness of the political system and distribution of wealth that is behind conflicts throughout Sudan, not old tribal rivalries as the author argued.

This view inevitably suggests that the source of problem in Sudan is the government in Khartoum and its accomplices who support a tyrannical government because of economic interests. The author of the above letter should be ashamed for trying to mislead others into thinking that the motivation behind the 'fuss' over Darfur is oil. In fact, it is oil that is delaying action to save millions of lives in Sudan.
