Mickey Mouse: What will come after Mindraf, Dandraf? I think those who earnestly want to better the lot of the ethnic Indians in the country should beware of fragmentation.

The fragmentation of Hindraf into many powerless contending groups will do a great disservice to the hopes of the many marginalised Indian Malaysians.

These people need help from the rest of the nation to become a useful and vibrant part of our national society.

Hindraf should be the pressure group to help them attain this goal.

On My 500th day under ISA

Yuvan: I was born in Malaysia and I am a member of the Indian Malaysian community. As a citizen, I know my rights are enshrined in the nation's constitution.

I am not a member of any political party or political group. I am just a commoner. But I have worked and I have served this country.

All through my working life, I have diligently paid my taxes and I know I have contributed my share, in whatever little way I could, towards building this nation.

I know my community has been ‘sidelined' for a long time now due to its lack of political and economic clout and the community's political leaders who called themselves ‘champions of the community' did not have the spine to stand up and demand for our rights.

But I did not give up hope that someday things will change and my children who are also citizens of this country will have a better future here.

And that hope was shattered forever on the day when five members of my community were arrested under the ISA.

Two of them were released about three weeks ago and three remain detained for 500 days now.

And my community is still shocked and wondering what did they do to be punished like this? They stood up and spoke for the community's rights, and they spoke with guts. That's all.

And I have always had faith in the constitution of our beloved nation and believed strongly that as citizens of this country, irrespective of our race, religion and creed, we all can stand up and speak for our rights - without fear. And I was wrong, terribly wrong.

On Indians are returning to BN, says Samy

Indians are not returning to BN simply because our sentiments are very high that MIC aided the Umno-led racist government to marginalise the Indians for far too long and for more than five decades.

The very thought that Samy Vellu has been reelected president for another term makes our stomachs so sick and he has the audacity to claim that the Indians are with him.

Never will the Indians be cheated again by the MIC. We have been discriminated not only in education but also in all the other mainstream activities of the country.

The current prime minister cannot restore our five decades of backwardness and that is why the Indians are known as an underclass all because of Indian leaders like you, Samy.

In multi-racial Malaysia there is no more room for racist parties like MIC, or Umno, or MCA or Gerakan.

Samy Vellu says that the Indian community is happy that the new PM has brought some ‘positive changes' to the Indian community and, therefore, Indians are returning to BN.

They think MIC has regained its trust of the Indians. Samy Vellu and MIC leaders feel contended with some ‘peanuts' given to the Indian community and that it is more than enough for the community to offer its support ‘en bloc' to BN and its leaders.

And so Samy Vellu and MIC leaders have again started doing what they know best - shower tons of praises on government leaders for whatever ‘peanuts' given and keep on daydreaming.

The current MB of Perak apparently seem oblivious as to how the car market operates or he simply ignorant.

He has been reported to have said in the paper that the Toyota Camry purchased by the previous regime can be sold for profit, as the minimum price set is RM148,000 each.

The cars were purchased for RM168,000 each. Any one can tell no matter how old the cars are, they tend to lose at least 20% as second- hand.

This works out to RM134,000 or so. So who in right mind will pay RM148,000 or above?

I was not shocked by the above news. Damai and many other associations for the disabled in this country have been actively advocating the need to have accessible buildings for past 10 years.

Unfortunately we yet to see changes taking place.

It is high time for the local councils to take necessary steps to strictly enforce the Uniform Building By-Laws (UBBL 34A) and accordingly ensure all public building are made fully accessible.

This legislation with regards to accessibility of public building has been in force since 1991 but no action has been taken by local councils to adhere to the same.

This definitely has done a great injustice to the disabled community in this country.

As such I call upon the Housing and Local Government Ministry to take immediate steps to instruct all local councils to implement the by-laws ( The writer is president, Damai Disabled Person Association ).
