PKR Rawang assemblyperson Gan Pei Nei today denied that her aides and locals were responsible for the fracas at site of Tenaga Nasional Bhd's high tension cable construction site last Thursday.

NONE The instigator, according to Pei Nei ( left ), was an unknown individual who claimed that he was with the police. She urged the police to investigate the matter immediately.

At a press conference today, Pei Nei showed a series of photographs depicting the man in plainclothes while making aggressive gestures towards Kampung Baru Sungai Terentang residents.

The man was also accused to using foul language at the residents, who were trying to stop TNB workers from filling in a ditch to allow heavy machinery to enter the construction site.

"This mystery man pushed me, causing the chaos. This resulted in my aide (Alex Gan) and two other auxiliary policemen from TNB falling into the ditch," said Gan.

The man then jumped into the ditch and arrested Alex, who is also Pei Nei's younger brother, and another aide A Kumaran, who came to help, she said.

NONE Although they requested for the man to produce his authority card, he refused to do so.

Double standards

Adding to the puzzle was the fact that when those arrested lodged a police report to confirm the identity of the mystery individual, the police said that they themselves were in the dark.

She adds that the police have thus far returned photographs of the mystery man and there has been no progress on the investigations.

"We called for the police to immediate their investigation and find out whether the instigator was us or the mysterious man," said Alex.

Alex also claimed that the police were practising double standards for arresting him and two others, when their only ‘crime' was attempting to prevent TNB from beginning work without a permit from the Selayang municipal council.

On the other hand, no action has been taken on TNB despite police reports being lodged against them.

"I think this is not fair, TNB has worked without a permit, but they didn't face any action, but we were arrested and detained in the lock-up," said Alex.

MB visit tomorrow

Last Thursday, about a dozen TNB workers appeared at the village unannounced and began work at about 9am.

Residents confronted the workers, who were backed with riot police, and the fracas broke out, resulting in the arrest of the three.

The standoff only ended at about 4.30pm when municipal officers arrive with the stop-work order.

TNB is attempting to resume the construction of the high tension cable towers that was halted five years ago, after villagers mounted a legal challenge to stop the project.

The matter was eventually brought to the Federal Court, which ruled in TNB's favour, allowing it to construct a series of towers that will cut the village in half and involve the demolition of numerous homes.

Despite the ruling, the villagers still resisted the company engineering team's attempts to resume work in March.

The Selangor government has intervened , and has offered TNB an alternative site for the towers and is pushing for a joint committee, which will involve the residents as well, to deliberate on the case.

Selangor Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim is expected to visit the site tomorrow.
