PKR will seek to limit the number of years a person can hold the post of chief minister in Sarawak, should Pakatan Rakyat succeed in taking over state government on April 16.

This is also in line with the party's constitution that limits its president to holding the position for three consecutive terms, PKR vice-president Mansor Othman told reporters in Kuching today.

NONE "(Our party constitution) puts the limit to (three) terms. I think we will (extend this to the state). We're quite firm on that. It is in line with democratic practices worldwide," he said.

Mansor ( left ) said this in reference to Pakatan's constant attacks on long-serving Sarawak chief minister Abdul Taib Mahmud, who it says has overstayed as chief minister for 30 years.

"Now Taib says he will finish his term and stay for two or three years more.

"He has been in power for too long. He is too arrogant, and neglects the people's needs. Sarawak will punish him for overstaying," Mansor said.

While a three-term limit exists in the PKR constitution, it is not included in Pakatan's common policy framework and is not stipulated in the Buku Jingga , the coalition's 100-day manifesto for reform if it forms the federal government.

No such limit exists either for the posts of chief minister and menteri besar in states already led by Pakatan - Penang, Kelantan, Selangor and Kedah.

In Kelantan, PAS spiritual leader Nik Aziz Nik Mat has been menteri besar since 1990.
