Sarawak activist Hii Tiong Huat, who was arrested a fortnight ago for his pro-Bersih 2.0 stunt in Kuala Lumpur, has turned his sights on the state’s chief minister, Abdul Taib Mahmud.

NONE Hii (left) is questioning the lease of state land to Taib’s brother under allegedly murky circumstances that he even he cannot fully trace.

He claimed that the land was the site of a former airfield, and was initially used from 1997 by Sarawak United People  Party to set up the United College Sarawak.

Hii said that, in 2004, the land was mysteriously leased out to Esprit Wealth Sdn Bhd in which Taib's brother, Mohammad Tufail Mahmud, is the major stakeholder.

"According to anti-corruption rules, if there is blood relationship, then it is considered corruption." he said.

Hii wants an explanation from Taib within a week.

"If Taib does not respond, I will lodge a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency (MACC), he added.

Equippe NONE d with documents and a huge map, Hii made his point to journalists outside the Kuala Lumpur-Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall this morning.

The college has since changed hands and has been renamed Kolej Laila Taib after Taib's late wife.

Hii also questioned why land in Sibu had been leased to Pelita Towerview Sdn Bhd in 1997, when the location had housed government offices and a sports field.

Of the 12 million shares in the company, 11.8 million are held by Sanyan Holdings Sdn Bhd, in which Mohammad Tufail is the majority stakeholder.

Sarawak's tallest building, Wisma Sanyan, now sits on the land. The complex, completed in 2001, houses government offices and is owned by the company.

"Do the government offices in Wisma Sayan pay rent (for office space) and do they have strata titles?

"If they have to pay rent, how much is being paid and if they have strata titles, then how much did it cost?"

‘Media boycotting me’

Responding to questions as to why he has not raised these issues in Sarawak, he claimed that the media there are boycotting him.

"Who is behind this, I do not know...," he said.

However, the status of the college land had been raised at a Sarawak legislative assembly in 2006 by Wong Ho Leng, the Bukit Assek assemblyperson.

NONE Hii had been arrested in Peta ling Street on July 8, when he displayed a Bersih signboard and Malaysian flag, chanting: "Bersih arrested, Kotor OK!"

However, he was freed on July 12.

He had pulled off a similar stunt in Sibu for two days but the police had ignored him, deeming him to be too eccentric for attention.

Hii's stunt has earned him a following of over 2,000 netizens on Facebook, who have dubbed him 'Uncle Bersih'.
