Internet protocol TV (IPTV) station DeTV has denied that the sudden decision to terminate its news and current affairs talk show ‘Eyes of Media’ (EOM), is the result of political interference.

The move is part of the company’s new business plan, which will be introduced next week, DeTV managing director Wei Chuan Beng said.

He explained that the reason to terminate ETV, the only channel that hosts locally-produced programmes, including EOM, is to focus the company’s resources on a new business project.

Under the project, DeTV will introduce a new TV decoder called Ecode,r which is a device to converge various Internet content.

Asked whether the decision was due to political pressure, Wei denied this.

“No, there is no political reason... we discussed the decision fairly,” he said when contacted last night.

Wei also claimed that he is unaware of any complaint against EOM by political parties.

30-minute programme

Launched on May 4 this year, EOM, a 30-minute programme that invites two commentators every night, from Monday to Friday, is very critical in discussing current affairs, including ‘sensitive’ political issues.

ETV, the channel that hosts EOM, is one of the 50-odd channels provided by DeTV, the nation’s first paid IPTV station owned by telecommunications company Redtone International Bhd, of which Wei is the managing director.

NONE Although EOM and its host Moon Wong ( left ) have begun to build a strong base of young people online with amusing and creative content, which can be shared and distributed online, it suddenly announced on Tuesday that the programme would be terminated next Wednesday.

Since then, EOM’s Facebook page has received many queries from its audience, asking whether it is a management decision or the result of political interference.

Wei said DeTV would still produce non-regular talk shows on major issues.

“We will listen to the views from various quarters. We will do it when there is an opportunity, but it won’t be regular.”
