The spouse of a kidney patient who passed away after Kajang Prison authorities allegedly denied him treatment is demanding action against its officials.

Human Rights Party (HRP) pro-tem central committee member S Thiagarajan lodged the report on behalf of Norlailee Hamzah at the Travers Police Station this morning.

The report also named Inspector-General of Police Ismail Omar and Attorney-General Abdul Ghani Patail for "refusing to take action" on the matter.

"We ask that Attorney-General Abdul Ghani to prosecute those responsible for this crime," said Thiagarajan.

According to him, evidence that 43-year-old Mohd Adnan Razali died as a result of not receiving dialysis treatment is in his death certificate which cites the cause of death as "Septicaemic Shock Secondary to Nosoconial Infection with underlying End Stage Renal Failure".

Or kidney failure from contracting the disease.

"When he was remanded at Sungai Buloh prison he received his dialysis treatment three times a week but when he was transferred to Kajang Prison after being convicted on March 26, 2010, he only received treatment once," said Norlailee.

mohd azlan razali death in custody Norlailee Hamzah and her two kids Asked why she was lodging the report so late, Norlailee said she was initially advised by "certain quarters" against pursuing the matter as post-mortems are not favoured by Muslims.

"But after thinking about my children, I decided to file this report today," she said. Mohd Adnan leaves behind two sons, aged 15 and 17.

'Weak when we visited'

Norlailee said she visited Mohd Adnan, at the Kajang Prison where he was serving a ten-year jail term for a drug-related offence, a week before his death, he appeared weak , complaining that he had not received his dialysis treatment.

"He could not talk and was very weak when we visited him," she said, showing a 2010 newspaper clipping of her frail-looking husband who had to be carried by two men.

Her husband, added Norlailee, was admitted to hospital on June 12, 2010 before passing away the same night.

"We are also disappointed with the condition of the prison because Mohd Adnan contracted the infection there, this shows that the prison is unhygienic and other such patients in prison are at risk," adds Thiagarajan.

Thiagarajan said that if the authorities failed to act on the police report, HRP will take the matter to court.
