The organiser of anti-Lynas rally Himpunan Hijau has said that it will not seek police permission for its protest march on April 28.

This, Himpunan Hijau steering committee member Clement Chin said, is because the green rally considers itself as part of the Bersih 3.0 sit-in protest which will be held on the same day.

“Come what may on that day, we are all together with Bersih in terms of security and mobilisation.

“We are part of Bersih 3.0, and in total, we are a package,” he said at a midnight press conference after a Bersih countdown rally in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Himpunan Hijau protesters are expected to gather at KLCC before moving to the Australian High Commission to voice its opposition to the RM700 million rare earth processing plant in Gebeng, Kuantan which is being set up by Australian-based mining company Lynas.

However, Chin ( left ) insists Himpunan Hijau is not conducting a protest march.

“It is not a march, we are only walking, we will gather at KLCC and then walk to Dataran Merdeka,” he said.

In a speech earlier, Chin said the Himpunan Hijau aims to gather 20,000 protesters.

“The protest will be made up of families with children, we just want to highlight the issue of health and the environment,” he said.

‘Negotiations will include Himpunan Hijau’

When asked if Bersih 3.0's negotiation with police and DBKL will include Himpunan Hijau, the former’s steering committee member Maria Chin Abdullah, at the same press conference, responded: “Of course we will include that.”

NONE “We shouldn’t see Himpunan Hijau as a separate initiative, we are all rakyat Malaysia moving towards Dataran Merdeka for a very good cause. We want to have clean and fair election, that is our objective,” she said.

A meeting by the electoral reform movement with the police and DBKL is expected soon as it had on Monday sent letters to the two authorities over the protest venue.

However, Maria added that police have already given the go-ahead for its planned Bersih 3.0 protest in Sabah and Sarawak.

The Bersih 3.0 rallies aim to gather 500,000 people in more than 50 cities locally and globally, with the main one being at Dataran Merdeka, to pressure the government into reforming the electoral system before polls are called.
