A group of Kolej Universiti Islam Selangor (Kuis) students protested today outside the home of a Selangor rep alleging he had received their hostel contract through his company, and was charging unreasonable rates.

About 20 students calling themselves  'Demi Mahasiswa KUIS (DMK)' gathered outside the BN Permatang assemblyperson Sulaiman Abdul Razak’s house to hand him a memorandum.

NONE They allege that the hostel concessionaire Rehda Resources Sdn Bhd belongs to Sulaiman and his wife.

DMK president Azrul Tahir told the media present that the Kuis hostel was charging excessive rates compared to other hostels of the same capacity.

For example, he said the Kuis Type A residence for six occupants costs RM1,980 a month, while in comparison a nearby hostel by a different operator Pangsapuri Vista was only charging RM500 for almost the same.

“We want Sulaiman Razak ( below ) to cancel the present contract and draw up a new one that is more equitable and affordable,” he told reporters.

NONE In a press conference yesterday, Azrul said the concession to Redha was awarded when BN was ruling Selangor.

In May, PKR director of strategy Rafizi Ramli (left) had claimed that Kuis was unable to reduce its fees because the institution was burdened by the costly and lopsided hostel concession.

According to him, RRSB was awarded the contract to construct the RM135 million 6,000-capacity hostel for Kuis students and was subsequently granted a 33-year concession to rent them out, worth RM508 million.

Sulaiman had acknowledged owning the firm with his wife and receivng the contract to build, operate and transfer the hostel facilities for Kuis students, but rubbished Rafizi's claim saying the profits were not as high as claimed.

It was also Rafizi at the time who had encouraged the students to find recourse through "political pressure" on the Permatang rep.

He said political pressure was an appropriate course of action because the holder of the hostel contract was a politician who “understood political language”.

“One avenue that I see (for the students) is to apply political pressure. These politicians are afraid if the people are unhappy with them. Such politicians are as if they belong in AF (the television reality show Akedemi Fantasia),” he had said.
