A lawyer has led a small group in protesting the Bar Council’s invitation to a PKR leader to speak at a workshop to be held tomorrow.

Mohd Khairul Azam Abdul Aziz was expressing his objection to PKR deputy secretary-general Steven Choong, who is to speak on guidelines and processes in preparing an election petition.

He argued that such a move would violate the “role, function and authority of the Bar Council as stated clearly in Section 57 of the Legal Profession Act 1976”.

NONE Khairul and his group of about 15 protested in front of the Bar Council office in Kuala Lumpur for about 20 minutes, carrying banners.

The group also demanded that lawyers focus on representing their clients’ interests, and not on politics.

Khairul claimed that there is a lawyer, who is also a politician, who is involved in a case that has been delayed 85 times.

“The Bar Council should look into the matter. The (lawyer) should prioritise the client’s interests and not be busy with politics,” he added.

NONE Rebutting Khairul, Bar Council president Lim Chee Wee ( right ) said the workshop is to explain election laws, not for Choong to campaign on behalf of Pakatan Rakyat.

As such, Lim said there is no violation of the Legal Profession Act.

He also said the Bar Council has invited both BN and Pakatan politicians, such as Khairy Jamaluddin, Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz and Dzulkefly Ahmad, to the workshop.

“I suggest that these protesters attend the workshop and assess it for themselves,” Lim added.
