Malaysia must act firmly against the embassies and high commissions of United States, Australia and other countries, which may have been used as a part of a global spying network, PKR said today.

Based on reports in Der Spiegel and Sydney Morning Herald, both countries had used their positions in Malaysia to secretly intercept calls and internet data under a US-directed operation dubbed ‘Stateroom' which may also involve Britain and Canada, PKR said in a statement.

NONE"There is a risk that the intelligence gathered could then be used by these countries to get a leg up, more so since Malaysia is in talks over the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA), " Fahmi Fadzil, PKR communications director (right) said.

PKR urged Putrajaya to pressure the US and Australia to answer to these allegations, which have also rocked many other countries.

Fahmi pointed out that this was a bi-partisan issue that had to do with the Malaysia's sovereignty and economic wellbeing, as both PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim and Minister for Agriculture and Agro-based industry Ismail Sabri Yaakob had recently voiced out against these unconventional spying methods.

The clandestine operations were first revealed in a US National Security Agency document leaked by exiled American former CIA employer and whistle-blower Edward Snowden.

It has put US Web giants such as Google, Facebook and Yahoo on the defensive, as they were the keepers of a lot of information on personal and corporate users.
