Two NGO leaders have questioned why the police are not using proper procedures to summon them to Dang Wangi police station over the Turun rally.

According to Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia's (SAMM) secretariat director Isamuddin Sanusi, his chief and Badrul Hisham Shaharin (Chegubard, right ) and propaganda director Edy Noor Reduan had both received a SMS requesting their presence today at 3pm.

"Calling them to appear (at the station) using SMS doesn't follow notice 111, however our two SAMM representatives are big hearted enough to give their cooperation to the police, even though neither were involved in any organising of the rally on Dec 31," he said in a statement today.

He said the duo will report at Dang Wangi tomorrow morning at 11am instead.

According to procedure, the police must issue a notice under Section 111 of the Criminal Procedure Code to request the presence of an individual for questioning at the police station.

On Christmas Eve a group of police paid a late night visit to Chegubard's house to question him, but failed.

They refused to disclose if the visit was related to the Dec 31 rally planned by Gerakan Turun Kos Sara Hidup's (Turun) against price hikes.

The rally at Kuala Lumpur's Dataran Merdeka eventually saw at least 10,000, some reported 50,000, turn up to protest various hikes in prices and taxes that are pushing up the cost of living.

'Rally peaceful if cops behave'

While the authorities were alleging plots to create chaos, detonate explosives and overthrow the government during the lead up to the rally, the organisers were vindicated that the protest went without major incident.

"SAMM stresses that the rally organised by the people on that night was conducted peacefully, far from the exaggerated picture painted by the police earlier," said Isamuddin.

"We therefore sympathise with the police who have to follow the dictates of the regime, and had deployed numerous forces to control (the rally) when there was no chaos and the people were diligent in maintaining order.

He said this mean police personnel had to leave their respective guard posts unattended just to guard the Dataran "giving criminals a free rein in their areas".

Isamuddin added that rallies would definitely be peaceful without the interference of the police.

"The statement that 'there are no such thing as peaceful rallies' is a shallow statement. Perhaps the senior police officer (who said this) has never watched Youtube ," he said.
