PBB senior vice-president Awang Tengah Ali Hasan has denied that the 11th Sarawak election is looming after an election security briefing this morning.

"This (discussion) is normal, held from time to time, and not unusual. It does not necessarily mean an election will be held," Awang Tengah told a press conference in Kuching this evening.

Earlier, Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi ( left ) who was present at the briefing this morning, was coy about the discussion, despite being queried repeatedly.

"Was there?," he turned to Awang Tengah twice when asked if the briefing this morning had touched on a possible snap election for Sarawak.

Awang Tengah finally took over and said it concerned the security aspect of elections.

"Yes, it was in terms of security and the general political situation (in the state)," he said.

Journalists had converged at Wisma Bapa Malaysia in Kuching this morning after it was revealed there would be an election security briefing there but were barred from entering beyond the gates.

Word on the briefing leaked after the Sarawak Information Department erroneously sent out an invitation to the media to cover the election security briefing.

However, it later sent out an amended invitation, with the briefing omitted.

Zahid said the briefing, which was attended by other Sarawak component party heads, also touched on crime andthe state's border security.

He added that his visit to Sarawak today had been planned even before news of Taib's impending resignation emerged.

The last Sarawak state election was last held in 2011 and the next one is not due until 2016.
