The police will act against the May 1 anti-GST rally if it is found to threaten public order, Kuala Lumpur Criminal Investigations Department (CID) deputy chief ACP Khairi Ahrasa said today.

Khairi ( at the podium ) said so when pressed by reporters on whether the police were planning to make pre-emptive arrests ahead of the rally, in order to prevent it from going on as planned.

“So far, our actions are to ensure peace, but if there is a threat against public order, we will take action,” he told a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters.

Asked whether the police have identified individuals who will be the main personalities behind the rally, like how they did for the New Year's Eve rally against price hikes, Khairi said the authorities have identified several NGOs that are organising the rally.

Even though the organisers have met with the Dang Wangi OCPD Zainuddin Ahmad to negotiate, Khairi still urged them to submit a notice to the police on the rally.

"We are yet to get any notice from those organising the rally but the police will be prepared to control the rally so that public order in Kuala Lumpur is protected and controlled," Khairi said.

"Even though they have met the OCPD, they still need to submit a notice 10 days before the date of the rally."

Rally organising committee spokesperson S Arutchelvan and several other leaders discussed the rally with Zainuddin at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters on April 16.

However, five days later, Inspector -General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar said he was still waiting for answers from the organisers on the final route of the rally between KLCC and  Dataran Merdeka.
