Selangor DAP chief Tony Pua has commended PAS rebel duo Saari Sungib and Hasnol Baharuddin after they were suspended for a year by their party today.

Pua said it is a "massive sacrifice" on the duo's part for supporting PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail for the Selangor menteri besar post.

"We hope they will remain strong and steadfast because the people of Selangor are with them," he told Malaysiakini.

Saari is the Hulu Kelang assemblyperson while Hasnul is the Morib assemblyperson.

The party's secretary-general Mustafa Ali however said they can write an appeal to the syura council secretary within 15 days, starting from today.

Saari and Hasnul had, in August, signed a statutory declaration in support of Wan Azizah during the Selangor menteri besar crisis.

Meanwhile, when asked whether the one-year suspension was excessive, Pua simply said "the people of Selangor will make that judgment".

PKR Youth also expressed disappointment with the suspension.

The wing’s vice-president Fahmi Fadzil said while PAS had the right to initiate disciplinary action, it must be noted that the pair had made a "brave and democratic" action.
