Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor should own up and apologise to PAS for his irresponsible statement claiming the Islamist party is deviant.

In a protest memorandum addressed to Tengku Adnan who is also federal territories minister,  the PAS Ulama wing called for an immediate retraction of his statement, while PAS Kedah Youth lodged a police report over the statement.

The ulama and Kedah PAS Youth said they viewed the wild and irresponsible allegation seriously, for Article 3 of the party constitution states Islam is a PAS policy and urged the people to follow the prophet's sunnah (practises).

“Apologise and retract the wild accusation. The ulama wing is willing to hold a muzakarah (meet) and discuss with Tengku Adnan,” the memorandum states.

The ulama wing pointed out that while the PAS party constitution states the party struggle to uplift Islam, there is nothing in the Umno constitution saying so.

It said that since independence, Umno as the governing party was the one that had damage the thinking and belief of Muslims by spreading the secular thinking that religion should be separated from politics, and liberalism to question Islamic laws.

“The ulama wing urges Tengku Adnan to retract or face legal action from PAS,” both the wing and Kedah PAS Youth said.

The statement by the PAS ulama wing is signed by seven leaders, including its information chief Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali.

Tengku Adnan, whom is also known as Ku Nan, three days ago accused PAS of deviant teachings and declared Umno to be the only party that can defend Islam.

PAS legal bureau chief Mohd Hanipa Maidin confirmed yesterday that the party will take legal action against the Umno secretary-general.
