Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has expressed hope for cooperation with the opposition parties in order to regulate the type and amount of contributions for political parties.

In his monthly meeting with officers from the Prime Minister’s Department, Najib said there had to be certain regulations with regard to contributions for political parties.

"We need cooperation from opposition parties so that we have a common stand in this matter," he said.

He also broached subject of corruption, which he said led to disaster like the fatal Cameron Highland mudslides.

"The Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report (on Sabah illegal immigrants), illegal gambling dens in the country are all because of corruption," he said.

The RCI had cleared the government and political parties of involvement in the mass issuance of citizenship to migrants in Sabah and instead pinpointed syndicates involving former National Registration Department (NRD) officers as the culprits who raked in millions of ringgit.

Expressing hope for strict action to be taken against such perpetrators, Najib said it was only fair that action be taken against the giver of bribes as well, and not just against the receiver.

"Corruption can destroy everything that we have built in the country so far," he said.

Najib also reminded civil servants to continue practising the culture of high performance, with emphasis on productivity, innovation as well as creativity.

"We all know that all these aspects will develop a high performance culture. The issue is on how to practice them.

"If we manage to practise a high-performance culture, I'm sure the country will be more outstanding," Najib added.
