University Malaya (UM) deputy vice-chancellor Rohana Yusof has dismissed talk that she is being forced out.

 

"Malaysians are so gullible. That's not true," she told Malaysiakini yesterday. 

 

She was reportedly being let go for being too lenient with the students.

 

According to Rohana, who has been in charge of students affairs since 2010, her position as deputy VC ends this year.

 

Yes, she is leaving UM, but it’s by choice, not by force.

 

"My second term ends on 7 Aug 2015. I will definitely leave and someone else will take over. I have enjoyed my job and have put all my plans in place.

"So when my term ends, I think I should leave," she said, adding she was confident the administration will run the varsity the way a premiere university should.

 

The Malaysian Insider had reported that Rohana's ( left ) position will be taken over by someone stricter to the students, noting that under her watch, they had carried out a banned talk last year featuring opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim. 

 

Meanwhile Mohd Hamdi Abd Shukor, another deputy VC (academic and international), whose contract ended on Dec 31 last year, will not get an extension on his contract.

 

UM VC Mohd Amin Jalaludin, through the International Corporate Relations Office (ICR), told Malaysiakini the process for replacing Mohd Hamdi has begun. 

 

However, he did not respond to a statement by DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang, who said he should step down for failing to defend his staff.
