Amid concerns of PAS boycott of the Permatang Pauh by-election, its ulama wing has urged all members to hit the ground and campaign.

However, PAS Dewan Ulama secretary Khairuddin Aman Razali said the ulama wing and PAS members will campaign for the implementation of hudud and to reject the goods and services tax.

"PAS and PKR must win both the Rompin and Permatang Pauh by-elections to signal that the people rejects GST and supports amendments to Act 355.

"The grassroots at Permatang Pauh wants PKR to support the hudud in Kelantan, in order to boost their victory in Permatang Pauh," he said in a statement.

Act 355, also known as the Syariah Courts Act, is the federal law which PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang (right) seeks to amend through a private member’s bill to pave the way for hudud in Kelantan.

The Act has to be amendment because it only allows syariah courts to mete out a maximum punishment of three years jail, RM5,000 fine or six lashes of the rotan.

Penalties under the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code II 1993 (Amendment 2015) Enactment include amputations and death by stoning.

PKR said it will not back Hadi’s bill to amend the Act, which was submitted without Pakatan Rakyat’s knowledge.

Echoing Hadi’s statement yesterday, Khairuddin said it is compulsory for all Muslims to support hudud implementation.

Hadi, yesterday, reportedly said he agreed with Permatang Pauh PAS’ view that it is haram (forbidden) to vote for a candidate who does not support hudud.

PAS is contesting the Rompin by election while PKR is set to contest PKR. Polling day for Rompin is May 5 while Permatang Pauh hits May 7.
