PKR parliamentarian Wong Chen has clarified that he wrongly used the term 'unity government' to refer to national reconciliation.

The Kelana Jaya MP was responding to a video circulating allegedly among PAS members of Wong saying that PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim supported the idea of a unity government.

“First off, I don’t speak on behalf of Anwar. I have no knowledge of his plans or his intentions,” Wong ( photo ) told Malaysiakini .

He explained that he had watched Anwar’s speech on National Day back in 2013 where the PKR leader spoke about the consensus arrangement with Barisan Nasional.

“I took it to mean a unity government. I wrongly used the word unity government instead of consensus, and some of these people are using this to attack Anwar.

“Anwar didn’t say it, I said it so it’s my mistake to equate consensus to unity government,” he said.

He also found it "perplexing" that some quarters were circulating the video to justify that Anwar had somehow wanted a unity government.

“This is ridiculous. Any PAS leader who wants to take this as proof that Anwar said certain things can come to me personally and I’ll explain to them.

“Other than that, stop this rubbish. Dig out back in 2013, what their own positions were regarding this issue,” he said.

Wong in the video posted on Youtube had spoken on the invitation of a mosque in Subang Jaya on National Day in 2013.

Wong said that Anwar had asked the BN to consider a unity government.

“We don’t want (dirty) politics to prolong, elections have concluded. As Kelana Jaya MP, it’s time for me to go to the ground and do my work.

“If possible, we will try to ask for BN’s cooperation to work with Pakatan Rakyat to form a unity government, for the good of the people,” he said.

Anwar responded to Najib

Meanwhile, PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli said Wong’s remarks were a one-off speech commenting on issues during the time.

“To take Wong’s statement as PKR’s stand to join Umno is stretching it,” he said.

The Pandan MP said Anwar had responded to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s call for national reconciliation after the last general election.

“The whole discussion was transparent. Anwar updated the Pakatan leadership on the offer made to PKR of the four minister posts.

“Wong’s statement in the video is in reference to that (national reconciliation)," he said.

Rafizi ( photo ) earlier today had denied that Anwar had agreed to form a unity government with BN.

He also expressed hope that PKR will not be dragged into PAS’ internal problems.

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang in a function yesterday claimed that all component parties in the opposition had agreed to form a unity government with BN.

He claimed that Anwar and the former PAS spiritual leader, the late Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, had agreed to the idea.
