Lawyers for jailed PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim have filed an application on his behalf for the Federal Court to hear evidence from former Commercial Crime Investigations Department director Ramli Yusuff.

Lawyer N Surendran said they filed the application as the main grounds of Anwar's defence against the prosecution of him was the issue of political conspiracy.

After his conviction for sodomy by the Federal Court on Feb 10, an application for the review of the conviction was filed on April 30.

One of the main grounds in Anwar's review application is that he was a victim of political conspiracy involving "powerful figures" in the government.

Surendran said they were then made to know that Ramli ( photo ), on May 27, had given a sworn testimony in the High Court that "strongly supported" political conspiracy against Anwar, dating back to the "black eye incident" back in 1998.

"We are filing the application to enable Ramli to give evidence on that (political conspiracy).

"This evidence, if allowed by the court, will be used in support of Anwar's application for review of his conviction," Surendran said.

Asked to fabricate evidence

Anwar's application states that Ramli's oral testimony be taken by the Federal Court to be used as evidence at the hearing of his review application.

Meanwhile, lawyer Latheefa Koya said the evidence given by Ramli to the High Court was on how, as the main witness of the "black eye incident", Ramli was the one who pulled former inspector-general of police Rahim Noor ( photo ) out of Anwar's prison cell.

Ramli had said that he was then asked by former inspector-general of police Musa Hassan, who was then the deputy director of CID (legal and prosecution) to fabricate evidence.

"That is enough to get the Federal Court to be interested, to know that there was a conspiracy going on those days," said Latheefa.

With Ramli's oral testimony, this would give an opportunity for Anwar's lawyers to further question and cross-examine Ramli, so that his evidence could be used to support Anwar's review application on his sodomy conviction.

Political conspiracy against Anwar

Ramli's testimony would also go to show that the political conspiracy against Anwar had continued from his first sodomy charge to the second one, said Latheefa.

She pointed out that the "players of the first conspiracy were still the same players" in Anwar's second sodomy charge.

The black eye incident was told by former KL CID chief Mat Zain Ibrahim that Musa and Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail ( photo ) had tried to cover up the incident using "fabricated evidence".

"In the second sodomy case, (accuser) Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan had met Musa and the AG was Gani and Mohd Shafee Abdullah was the prosecutor.

"[...] This shows that they should not have been involved in the second sodomy case.

"So we suspect, what's the motive of continuously prosecuting Anwar?" she said.

Anwar is currently serving a five-year jail sentence at the Sungai Buloh prison since his conviction on Feb 10.
