The Malay rights group Perkasa has pledged support for the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), urging it to act ‘without fear or favour’ in its 1MDB-related investigations.

Perkasa supreme council member Sirajuddin Salleh said although the two MACC officers who were transferred last week have been reinstated , they nevertheless give the impression that there had been attempted interference in their investigations.

“It shows that as though there may be something interfering their work in conducting investigations, prosecution and so on.

“Therefore, we feel that it is high time that Perkasa, on behalf of the people, (demand) that whatever is done by MACC is done without fear or favour.

“It is a matter of justice. What is right must be upheld; what is wrong must be called out. There should be nothing that is hidden or untrue,” he said.

Sirajuddin ( photo ) was speaking to reporters outside the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya after leading a delegation of Perkasa members to hand over a memorandum to the commission.

“We guarantee to the MACC that as long as the MACC performs its job in a manner that is proper, trustworthy, and honest, we Perkasa will continue to defend MACC personnel from any extra-judicial attacks.

“Therefore, Perkasa hopes MACC would not bow to pressure from any party,” read the memorandum signed by Perkasa secretary-general Syed Hassan Syed Ali and its monitoring and integrity bureau secretary Azrul Akmal Saharudin, which was circulated to the press.

Twists and turns of 1MDB saga

Meanwhile, Sirajuddin stressed the importance of the official investigations on 1MDB.

He lamented that even the well-educated and the well-experienced find it difficult to follow the many twists and turns of the 1MDB saga, including allegations of fraudulent documents.

He said Perkasa had previously called for the Royal Commission of Inquiry on 1MDB but this had not gained traction, thus the MACC is the next best hope to uncover the truth.

The MACC is currently investigating the money that was transferred into Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s ( photo ) account, including a series of transactions that originated from former 1MDB subsidiary SRC International Sdn Bhd.

Najib had previously denied taking public money for personal use, while 1MDB had denied that its funds went into Najib’s account.
