A police report has been lodged against the Education Minister and his ministry’s secretary of the asset management and acquisitions department for the non-payment of wages for 50 cleaners at several Ipoh schools.
In lodging the report, Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) wanted to know whether funds meant for paying wages were misappropriated or otherwise.
“The 50 workers still haven't received their July pay, and to their disappointment, they haven't got their August pay too.
“PSM's report asks the police to investigate if there has been misappropriation or misuse of the allocated funds such that the workers cannot be paid,” the party said in a statement today.
The report was lodged at the Ipoh police headquarters this morning by PSM’s team headed by Sungai Siput MP Dr Jeyakumar Devaraj.
In its report, PSM said the 50 workers work with Double Click Enterprise, a company chosen by the Education Ministry.
“The workers were informed by their employer that the ministry has yet to send their cheques to their employer.
“This was also confirmed by the Education Ministry when we called them by phone.
“This is against the Employment Act where salaries must be paid before the 7th of each month,” read the report.
Yet to receive July and August pay
PSM added that it was not the first time that such incidents had occurred.
The party had complained about the matter to the Perak education department and the ministry in February this year.
The education ministry is now headed by Mahdzir Khalid ( photo ) who replaced Muhyiddin Yassin when he was dropped in a cabinet reshuffle.
“The ministry had referred us to the secretary of the asset management and acquisitions department.
“We also made a complaint to the Perak education department’s acquisitions division on Aug 25 and via email to the ministry’s secretary of the asset management and acquisitions department on Aug 28.
“But until today, the cleaners have yet to receive their July and August pay,” said PSM.
When contacted by Malaysiakini , the Education Ministry was unclear who exactly is in charge of such matters while the Perak education director could not be reached.
