Post-Bersih witch hunt by police stinks of RM2.6b cover up
The moves by the police to pursue protesters who took part in the Bersih 4 rally gives the impression that they are covering for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak over his scandals, said its organiser Bersih.
The Bersih 4 rally on Aug 29 and 30 also called for Najib's ( photo ) resignation on the RM2.6 billion deposited into in his personal bank accounts.
"Malaysians had gathered to find the truth, particularly about the 1MDB scandal and the flow of US$700 million (RM2.6 billion) into the prime minister's accounts as verified by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
"The action against members of the public (who had joined Bersih 4) gives off the suspicion that it is an effort to cover up the truth and denying the right to protest," the movement said in a statement today.
Bersih noted that several supporters have been arrested after the rally, including for wearing the Bersih 4 T-shirts.
As such, the movement said it will reactivate its legal hotline at 018-3135988 to provide legal assistance for anyone facing action for their participation in the rally.
Action aimed at intimidating protesters
Bersih stressed that the rally held was in accordance with the law and is a right enshrined in the Federal Constitution.
"We see the legal action and investigations against Bersih 4 participants locally and abroad as harassment aimed at intimidating them and nothing more.
"Police should stop wasting time in trying to find victims to be hauled up and investigated.
"Hundreds of thousands of Malaysians took to the streets of Kuala Lumpur in Bersih 4 T-shirts as they believed in the right to assemble and protest against the allegations of wrongdoings by the prime minister and government," it said.
Bersih added that it is committed to its cause for electoral reform and will not be deterred.
