'Charles must have anticipated landmines with explosive SD'

An opposition leader said that Charles Suresh Morais, who shocked the nation with an incendiary statutory declaration, is either a fraud or someone who believes his allegations to be true.

However, Lim Kit Siang said since he has not met the brother of murdered senior deputy public prosecutor Kevin Anthony Morais, he is not in a position to judge his personality or character.

On the same note, the veteran DAP leader believes the US-based businessman must have known he would be walking into a place littered with landmines.

"I would think that as a man of the world, Charles would know that he risks not only an expose but a demonisation of his past and even systematic character-assassination if he proceeds with his explosive SD – and he must have agonised over it for quite some time.

"Either Charles is an inveterate liar and big-time money-grubber or he was speaking what he perceived to be the truth, and his preparedness to take the risk of an expose and demonisation of his past and even character-assassination are points to his credit in his agony over what he should do to protect the memory of his brother," he said in a press statement.

Following his SD, Charles' previous financial troubles and legal wrangles have come under the spotlight.

Meanwhile, Utusan Malaysia quoted another brother Richard, who claimed Kevin's remains from Hospital Kuala Lumpur and cremated them amid attempts by Charles to secure a second post-mortem, as dismissing the claims in the SD.

Meanwhile, Lim also reiterated his call for an international independent inquiry, which could clear Malaysia's name and rehabilitate its scandal-scarred integrity.

"Let everybody show that they have nothing to hide with the Malaysian government inviting an independent and international investigation into the murder of Kevin, which will help to restore national and international confidence in the Malaysian system of justice after the many setbacks caused by so many scandals," he added.

In his SD, Charles had claimed there was a conspiracy behind his brother's murder and that he (Charles) was in possession of a pen drive which detailed the cases which the DPP was working on.

He also claimed that Kevin told him he was involved in a case concerning Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor.

Kevin was seconded to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), which is probing the RM2.6 billion political donation and RM42 million from SRC International deposited into Najib's personal bank accounts.

Charles also claimed his brother had penned his initials on a purported charge sheet for Najib, which was exposed by whistleblower website Sarawak Report .

The authorities have dismissed the charge sheet as fake while the prime minister has denied any wrongdoing.
