Dr Mahathir Mohamad, has rubbished claims Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak is anything like him.

Instead, Mahathir, who is Najib's fiercest critic, believes he is more like Najib’s father, the late Abdul Razak Hussein, Malaysia’s second prime minister.

“What are the things that Najib has done that I have also done? He has a RM42 billion debt, he opened his own company (1MDB) and he became the adviser.

“I never did all those things. So how can people say I am like him? I really don’t understand that.

“But I am like his father, yes,” he said, to cheers from the audience at an event in Senawang today.

The 90-year-old pointed out how Razak ( photo ) had prioritised the development of the Malays.

“When I was the prime minister I built roads, houses and clinics. I did a lot of things (to develop) villages.

“But what Najib has done is he has hid money in his accounts, I didn’t.

“Well, I do have some money in my accounts. But it’s not the same,” he said, to laughter from the 400-strong audience at the venue’s hall today.

Najib is currently facing mounting criticism against various issues, especially with regard to his brainchild 1MDB and the RM2.6 billion issue.

He, however, has consistently denied any wrongdoing and abusing public funds for personal gain.

The prime minister also claimed that there is a conspiracy to topple him.
