Selangor executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah today denied that the term of the 288 local councillors will be extended for another two months.

"I want to clarify that the state executive council meeting today reaffirmed that no extension will be granted," he told Malaysiakini through text message.

"The councillors' list will be endorsed next Wednesday and the new term will start from Jan 15, 2016 to Dec 31, 2017," he said.

"(Amanah central committee member) Khalid Samad is incorrect; no such extension has been given," he added.

Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali ( photo ) would discuss with all parties on whether to appoint Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) members as councillors, he said.

"The menteri besar has said he will discuss with all parties this week and resolve the issue," Ean Yong added.

Earlier, Khalid has said that the term of local councillors in Selangor, which will end tomorrow, has been extended for another two months.

He said this when asked on the status of plans to allocate local council seats to Amanah leaders.

“I understand that they (state government) have extended the appointments of the current local councillors for another two months,” he told Malaysiakini .

“So there will be more thorough discussion on this issue, that’s the situation.”

Decision in one or two weeks's time

The two-year term of the current batch of councillors was supposed to end tomorrow.

There is a possibility that the term would be extended as more time is needed to solve the problem since PAS, PKR and the DAP would have to relent in giving up their seats for Amanah.

Selangor PKR deputy chief Zuraida Kamaruddin, on the other hand, said the decision to allocate seats to Amanah would be made in one or two weeks’ time.

Zuraida also confirmed that she has been responsible for handling the process of appointing PKR councillors.

Pointed out that some of the parties would have to give up their seats, Zuraida said that they would have to therefore get the menteri besar to look into the matter.

“Yes, this hasn’t (been solved),” she said.

Selangor has 288 councillors – 120 seats were allocated to PKR while DAP and PAS have 98 and 70 respectively.

Selangor Amanah Youth last month urged for the party to be given local councillor appointments in the coming term.

The two Amanah state assemblypersons in Selangor are Saari Sungib, who represents Hulu Kelang, and Hasnul Baharuddin, representing Morib.

Amanah is a PAS splinter that was launched on Sept 16 this year, and consists of mainly former PAS members who were unhappy with this year’s PAS party election that saw the Islamic party conservatives make a clean sweep of the top party posts.
