Kini Roundup: Love and hate for Guan Eng, no sorry or goodbye from IGP

RECAP | Key headlines that you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Here’s a recap of major headlines yesterday you may have missed.

Love and hate for Guan Eng

DAP parliamentarians are out in full force defending Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng over his RM2.8 million bungalow purchase, in what they claimed is a systemic onslaught by BN against the opposition.

Federal Minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan blasted the DAP reps for blaming BN, stating it was not the ruling coalition which put Lim in the position he is in.

But BN wasted no time in capitalising on the controversy, with its Youth wing demonstrating in Penang and accusing the chief minister of robbing land from the poor.

The heat from the hot potato even spilled over to a humble cafe in Damansara Perdana in Kuala Lumpur, as DAP asked Sköhns Canteen Facebook page to remove a parody poster which poked fun at Lim over his bungalow buy.

Both the police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) are expected to quiz Lim , who had insisted the purchase was above board.

IGP snubs calls for apology over teen shooting

Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar faced a wave of demands for him to apologise or step down after the Shah Alam High Court found him and the police force liable for the shooting of 14-year-old Aminulrasyid Amzah.

However, an unrepentant Khalid said he will give neither .

Cops haul up opposition leaders

PKR's Subang MP R Sivarasa was grilled for almost six hours for sharing a fake Time magazine picture of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak on corruption, albeit its content being genuine.

The party's Machang Bubuk state assemblyperson Lee Khai Loon was also informed by the police that he will be investigated under the Sedition Act but it has yet to provide details.

Other Kini bites

Former prime minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is the new Petronas adviser , replacing his predecessor Mahathir Mohamad who was sacked for going against the government.

Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali, far from shuddering at being likened to Donald Trump, was proud of it as he said it meant he was US presidential material.

Once a potent force, Hindraf continued to be plagued by infighting with the formation of a new splinter, Hindraf People's Movement.

The government executed three men on death row despite plans to abolish corporal punishment.

Pakatan Harapan announces its signature drive for Najib's resignation will kick off next week.

Looking ahead

Former prime minister Mahathir is expected to make his first public appearance today since filing a lawsuit against Najib for breach of fiduciary duty and misfeasance in public office.

Journalists are also expected to ask Mahathir about his Petronas adviser post being replaced by the same man - Abdullah - whom Mahathir helped remove as prime minister.

The Anti-PPSMI coalition is set to hold a protest in Kuala Lumpur to oppose the dual-language system in schools but the demonstration is expected to be less prominent to its 2009 rally which saw the teaching of maths and science in English abolished.
