Sarawak DAP chief Chong Chieng Jen has confirmed that Sarawak DAP will soon discuss the post of Sarawak opposition leader.

Chong was responding to PKR vice-president Dr Xavier Jayakumar who had suggested that Sarawak PKR chief Baru Bian be named the opposition leader in Sarawak.

“We'll discuss this and see how it goes. (There’s) no point in fighting over positions,” he told Malaysiakini.

Commenting on PKR’s significant gains in rural seats, Xavier, yesterday, had called on all opposition parties to ‘speak in one voice’.

“In light of the winds of change in the rural heartland of bumiputera Sarawak, PKR would like to suggest that moving forward, Baru, a Sarawakian bumiputera native, be named the leader of the Opposition in Sarawak.”

The Seri Andalas state assemblyperson had argued how Baru personified and symbolised the change in rural Sarawak.

Baru managed to retain the Ba’kelalan constituency in the Sarawak state polls which concluded on Saturday. However it was with a slim majority of 538 votes.

Chong, on the other hand, also retained his Kota Sentosa state seat, defeating BN’s Wilfred Yap Yau Sin with a comfortable majority of 2,819 votes.

PKR maintained its status quo with the party winning three seats, the same seats it held previously, while DAP managed to win seven constituencies, but losing five of its former seats.

Pakatan Harapan, therefore, obtained only 10 constituencies collectively. Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) did not win any of the 13 seats it contested in.
