Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday.

New developments in US, S’pore probe on 1MDB

The 1MDB saga continued to make waves with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) investigating the purchase of luxury properties by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s stepson Riza Aziz, purportedly using 1MDB’s funds, according to The Wall Street Journal.

A separate investigation into 1MDB in Singapore also revealed how funds of SRC International, owned by Malaysia’s Finance Ministry, was paid to individuals who facilitated questionable transfers of 1MDB’s funds.

Banca della Svizzera Italiana (BSI Bank), which was used for the transfer of some of 1MDB's funds, was also in the news as leaked documents from the US Justice Department detailed the bank’s techniques in helping certain clients.

Sungai Besar in spotlight

Sungai Besar is already in the news even though the date for its by-election had yet to be announced with Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali hitting the ground.

PAS had told Pakatan Harapan to stay out of the by-election as the party traditionally contests the seat against Umno.

Amanah said it wants Pakatan Harapan to contest the by-election, which will potentially make it a three-cornered fight.

However, Azmin is hopeful that negotiations with PAS for a united opposition can go on, even if it means discussing until “doomsday”.

On Umno's side, potential candidate Jamal Md Yunos, a key red-shirt leader, was accused by former ally Mohd Ali Baharom of threatening to kill him, which the former denies.

Other Kini bites

Former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim was briefly out of jail as he paid his last respects to his sister, his second family member to have passed away during his imprisonment.

Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar said Johor crown prince Tunku Ismail Ibrahim’s claim the police were tapping his phone was merely a “misunderstanding”.

PKR’s five state assemblypersons were allegedly told by the DAP-led government to toe the line or be removed from the administration over their concerns about the state's reclamation projects.

Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai said debris discovered in South Africa and Mauritius were almost certainly that of the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370.

PSM’s S Arutchelvan was barred from entering Sarawak despite the conclusion of the May 7 state election.

Looking ahead

The Election Commission is set to announce the dates for the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections at a press conference at 9am, following the death of two Umno parliamentarians in a helicopter tragedy.

The Sarawak cabinet is expected to be unveiled following BN’s landslide victory in the Sarawak election.

Meanwhile, Bersih is calling a press conference at 11am over alleged offences during the state polls.
