PAS no 2 urges ceasefire

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man urged a ceasefire among opposition parties as he said a shootout between PAS and Pakatan Harapan would only benefit the ruling BN coalition.

This was welcomed by Pakatan Harapan parties DAP and PKR, with PKR deputy president Azmin Ali calling for at least an electoral pact in the lead-up to GE14 to avoid damaging multi-cornered fights.

However, PAS splinter party Amanah was more guarded and questioned if Tuan Ibrahim's call reflects the opinion of the entire leadership within the Islamist party.

Hell notes controversy rages on

Both DAP and Taiping parliamentarian Nga Kor Ming lodged police reports yesterday over the rowdy protest featuring hell notes by Umno Youth at the DAP headquarters on Tuesday.

The protest was against allegedly “anti-Islam” postings on a since deactivated Nga Kor Ming Facebook fanpage, but Nga has denied his involvement in the matter. He has been summoned by the police for his statement to be recorded in Kuala Lumpur.

Rural and Regional Development Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the protest was justified as the cartoon, which depicts children asking for ‘donation’ and ‘dedak’ (animal feed) instead of ‘duit raya’, is an insult as it likened them to animals.

However, Culture and Tourism Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz said while the postings were offensive, it was not right to hold an unruly demonstration over the matter.

MCMC probes Malaysiakini, again

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating a complaint filed against the “extreme and disgusting” comments posted by readers on a July 5 Malaysiakini report on preacher Zakir Naik.

Journalist groups, the Institute of Journalists (IOJ) and Gerakan Media Marah (Geramm), condemn the probe.

IOJ lamented the growing tendency to clamp down on journalists and media organisations on grounds of provoking sensitivities over various issues.

DAP Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua questioned whether audit firm Deloitte Malaysia was “bluffed” by 1MDB into believing that the troubled state fund had redeemed its controversial Cayman Islands investment in 2014.

This is after an expose by Sarawak Report on the matter which raised suspicion no money was redeemed.

Adelaide University renamed Taib Mahmud Court to Colombo Plan Alumni Court after a two-year campaign by civil society and politicians who accused the Sarawak governor of benefiting from illegal logging.

Some RM554 million in Tabung Haji investments are at risk of being lost following the fund's investments in TH Heavy Engineering Bhd (THHE), claimed Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli.
