Here are the key headlines from yesterday that you may have missed, in brief.

Another terror attack in France

An attacker killed at least 80 people and injured scores of others when he drove a truck at high speed into a crowd watching Bastille Day fireworks in the French Riviera city of Nice late Thursday.

A Malaysian student from a Singaporean university was injured in the attack, but is currently in stable condition at a French hospital, The Straits Times reported.

In light of the incident, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had offered Malaysia's expertise and standard operating procedure on terrorist deradicalisation and rehabilitation to France as well as other countries.

Mixed reaction to Dr M's new party

Jailed former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim welcomed the announcement by his nemesis, ex-prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, to form a new party and a grand opposition coalition, describing the move as a positive step.

Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) however rejected outright any possibility of it joining the grand coalition. Its secretary-general A Sivarajan told Malaysiakini the party does not wish to be an ally of the former prime minister, whom it dubbed as an "ex-dictator".

Meanwhile, Zahid said Umno is unfazed by the new political vehicle, vowing to use all the tricks and tools of the trade that Mahathir had himself taught them, against their former master and his new allies.

Pressure mounts in wake of 1MDB leak

DAP lawmaker Tony Pua questioned whether the new 1MDB board of directors will take action on the company’s suspicious transactions after whistleblower site Sarawak Report published a series of exposé allegedly from the Auditor-General's Report on 1MDB.

DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang wondered what happened to the police investigation into the Public Accounts Committee's report on 1MDB, which was initiated three months ago, and if police had a copy of the audit report that the PAC findings were based on.

Responding to questions on the authenticity of the alleged audit report that Sarawak Report retyped verbatim, its editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown explained that this was done to protect its source, which could be identified by a visual inspection of the document.

More Kini bites

Malaysia's longest serving lawmaker Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah said his current term as Gua Musang MP will be his last. Despite his popularity, the 79-year-old Kelantan prince said it was time for him to hand over the reins to someone else.

Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali said he will join a political party before the 14th general election, though he refused to state which party it would be as he was still studying the political situation.

Two suspects arrested in connection with the murder of PKR Miri branch secretary Bill Kayong were charged in the Magistrate's Court in Miri yesterday, under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

Looking ahead

A memorial for the late Teoh Beng Hock, the DAP political aide who fell to his death from a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office in Shah Alam, will be held this evening and it will go on until tomorrow morning.
