Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) has submitted an official request for issues surrounding troubled state investment fund 1MDB to be discussed by the Conference of Rulers at its meeting next month.

Amanah communications director Khalid Samad said the move was necessary as there has so far been no action from the government since the United States Department of Justice filed a civil suit to recover nearly US$1 billion in assets and funds linked to 1MDB.

“The issue of 1MDB was raised by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong last year, at the time when it was hotly debated.

“As we all know, these things have been happening for so long, but there has been no action by the government…,” Khalid told reporters outside Istana Negara in Kuala Lumpur today.

Khalid (photo), together with Amanah international bureau chief Raja Kamarul Bahrin Raja Ahmad Shah and Amanah Youth vice-chief Wan Anwar Wan Ibrahim, had earlier submitted an official letter, requesting that the issues be discussed at the next Rulers’ Conference meeting.

“Our letter has been received and we were also advised to submit it at the office of the Keeper of the Rulers Seal at Jalan Bellamy, because the meeting in October may held be during the Parliament session,” he said.

Raja Kamarul Bahrin echoed Khalid’s concerns over the government’s inaction after the matter was raised by the Conference of Rulers in October last year.

“Actually, we are not just submitting a request to the rulers but also showing our support for the rulers (on their stand) during their meeting on Oct 7 last year.

“This matter was raised by the Rulers Conference and this was quite extraordinary. It has never happened before.

“Now, it has been almost a year since the matter was raised, but no action has been taken,” said Raja Kamarul Bahrin, the MP for Kuala Terengganu who is a member of the Terengganu royal family.

‘Issue to be raised in Parliament’

Khalid, who is the MP for Shah Alam, also said that the 1MDB issue would once again be raised in the coming session of Parliament in October.

“Definitely it (the 1MDB issue) will be raised, if not by the opposition leader (PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail), it will be done by an Amanah MP.

“But ideally, we want it to be raised by the opposition leader because it is our priority to show the importance of this issue,” Khalid said.

In the most recent turn of events, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Abdul Rahman Dahlan told British media network BBC that the “Malaysian Official 1”, stated in the DOJ suit as having received US$731 million in funds siphoned from 1MDB, was Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Najib has so far been cleared of any wrongdoings by all local authorities, but the police recently reopened their investigation into 1MDB, based on the findings in a Public Accounts Committee investigation.
