Gerakan Youth has lodged a police report over a Facebook post allegedly posted by Himpunan Merah leader Jamal Md Yunus threatening a repeat of the May 13, 1969 incident.

The party’s deputy youth chief Andy Yong said that while Jamal had claimed the post was from a fake account, the police must investigate whether or not the post had actually come from Jamal.

“We have been made to understand that Jamal had said yesterday that his Facebook account had been impersonated. Therefore, we urge the police to investigate whether the Facebook account had been faked.

“If it is true (that the Facebook post came from Jamal), we hope the police would take action under the Sedition Act and the Penal Code. If the Facebook account is fake, we also urge for appropriate action to be taken and for an investigation into who impersonated the Facebook account.

“This is because the comments made are very serious,” he told reporters today.

Yong, who was was accompanied by several Gerakan Youth leaders, told reporters this outside the Dang Wangi district police headquarters this afternoon, after lodging the police report.

The Facebook post in question was posted on Sept 21, and warned that “I promise the May 13 tragedy will repeat along with flying parang if Bersih 5 is held at the time, date and place as planned on Nov 19. Long live Malays!”.

In a Twitter post last night, inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar said such statements were seditious and unacceptable, and vowed the police would investigate.

However, Jamal decried that the Facebook account was fake and claimed he had been impersonated. He claimed that this was proof that the Bersih movement was ‘the anti-Christ’ (dajjal).

Meanwhile, Yong also urged the police to take action over the fracas that happened recently, such as the ones in Teluk Intan, Sabak Bernam and Gurney Drive.

In Teluk Intan on Oct 1, it was reported that a group of red shirt members led by Jamal, confronted a group of Bersih supporters participating in a nationwide convoy to promote the Bersih 5 rally.

In the incident, Jamal was seen in a video snatching a banner from Bersih supporters.

Earlier the same day, a large group of red shirt participants led by Penang Umno Youth chief Rafizal Abdul Rahim gathered at Gurney Drive to oppose the state’s Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, and the Bersih 5 convoy that was to arrive in Penang a week later.

Despite this, the Penang launch for Bersih 5 took place peacefully earlier today.

In Sabak Bernam last Saturday, Jamal’s red shirt supporters pelted eggs at two Bersih supporters, one of whom was knocked down by a flying kick to his back. The police had arrested three suspects over the incident.

Referring to the confrontation between Bersih supporters and the groups opposing the movement, Yong urged the media not to fan flames over the issue.

He also urged Bersih supporters not to provoke Jamal’s group.

When contacted for clarification, Yong said he was referring to incidents in past Bersih rallies such as when Bersih supporters stomped on Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak photo.

“So don’t do this sort of things. It would definitely provoke them,” he told Malaysiakini.
