Enter Amanah's syariah bill

Amanah submitted a motion to strengthen syariah courts, amid lobbying by non-Muslim groups urging MPs to reject PAS president and Marang MP Abdul Hadi Awang's Private Member's Bill to amend the Syariah Court (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act (Act 355) to pave the way for hudud.

Amanah's Pakatan Harapan partners will discuss the motion, which Amanah says is more "holistic" compared to Hadi's, and constitutional.

Meanwhile, Hadi responded to lobbying by the Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hindusim, Sikhism and Taoism (MCCBCHST) against his bill, saying that blocking it would be unfair to Muslims.

Umno veteran and Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah said Hadi took the wrong route to pave the way for hudud, as his bill to amend Act 355 should have first been presented to the Conference of Rulers and discussed with respective state Islamic affairs councils.

Shafie unveils Parti Warisan, Muhyiddin gets brickbats

The Registrar of Societies accepted former Umno president Mohd Shafie Apdal's application to name his new party Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan). Warisan has four lawmakers - two MPs and two Sabah state assemblypersons.

Sabah DAP extended an olive branch despite earlier condemning Likas assemblyperson Junz Wong for jumping ship from DAP to Warisan, while Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) says it "can't wait to extend a hand in friendship".

Meanwhile, Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin was greeted by banners calling him a "traitor" in the heartlands of Selangor, where the former Umno number two gave his maiden speech at a political rally in the state.

DOJ questions sub judice, says speaker

Dewan Rakyat speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia said the government need not reply to any questions regarding the US Department of Justice (DOJ) lawsuit to freeze 1MDB-linked assets, citing "sub judice".

Meanwhile, Amanah's Sepang MP Hanipa Maidin returned to Dewan Rakyat after collapsing at the last parliamentary sessions following a brain haemorrhage. Wheelchair bound soon after his operation, Hanipa now walks using a cane for assistance.

Also in Parliament, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak says cutting the existing six percent rate Goods and Services Tax (GST) could cripple the economy.

Political cartoonist Zunar was slapped with a travel ban and barred from boarding a flight to Singapore, purportedly due to "police orders".

Bersih praised police for apprehending red shirts activists who roughed up journalists covering the polls reform movement’s convoy in Kuala Selangor, while brickbats rain on red shirts for assaulting media personnel.

Sabah government clarified that Water Department director and deputy director had been suspended from duty following their arrests for corruption, after the director's lawyer claimed that his client was back at work.

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad told the government it should tear down not only Petronas Twin Tower, but also the federal administrative capital of Putrajaya and various other landmarks if it was to rid all traces of his legacy.

Gerakan secretary-general Liang Teck Meng and DAP's Serdang MP Ong Kian Ming slugged it out over Penang's economic performance under DAP's administration, which each claiming the other was misrepresenting economic data.
