Death threats to Bersih leaders

Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah, her predecessor Ambiga Sreenevasan and the electoral reform NGO's secretariat manager Mandeep Singh received death threats from an anonymous individual claiming to represent the Islamic State in Malaysia.

Maria further revealed that those who issued the death threat against her, also sent images of her three sons' MyKad. "I don't know how they got hold of the photos. This just shows how desperate they are," she said.

Red-shirt leader Jamal Md Yunos dismissed the death threats as pure fabrication by Bersih to court support and sympathy, and insisting that neither he nor his men were involved.

APM suspends staff over 'snake-wade'

Four instructors and six assistants from the Kuala Kangsar Civil Defence Force (APM) were suspended from their duties after a video of them, forcing schoolgirls to wade through a pond containing snakes, went viral on social media.

The Education Ministry had earlier demanded that action be taken against the APM officers responsible for the incident, expressing worry for the safety and emotional state of the students involved.

Hadi's motion pushed down

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's controversial 'hudud' motion was pushed down the Order Paper on the second day of the third and final session of the Dewan Rakyat sitting for this year. With more government business trickling in, it might go lower still.

Umno vice-president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi refused to state whether Umno MPs will support Hadi's 'hudud' motion in Parliament, despite earlier expressions of support from the ruling coalition's dominant Malay party.

Parti Amanah Negara is proposing its own Private Member's Bill to strengthen the syariah courts, which it claimed is different from the one Hadi is pushing.

Pakatan Harapan parties will try to reach a consensus on Amanah's Private Member's Bill to strengthen the syariah courts, pending details of the proposal, PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali said.
