What the budget speech didn't tell you

The controversial East Coast Rail Line, which cost was allegedly inflated to bail out 1MDB, was part of Budget 2017 with a price tag of RM55 billion.

Malaysiakini looked beyond the budget speech, scrutinising the numbers in the federal expenditure estimate which saw funding for major universities falling to its lowest levels since Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak took power.

The numbers also showed that Budget 2017 did not allocate funds for the 14th general election, which suggests national polls may be much later.

We also outlined cuts that was not mentioned in the budget speech including possible toll hike, cuts to medical supply and increase in the price of goods for East Malaysia and the interiors. Find out here.

Jamal's bizarre Bersih claim

In a bizarre claim, anti-Bersih red shirts leader Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Md Yunos accused Bersih of impersonating the reds who had attacked their convoys.

He also chastised Dr Mahathir Mohamad for joining the opposition, declaring that he would spit on the former prime minister.

Meanwhile, Bersih convoy in Johor was briefly blocked by the red shirts after they took over a road.

Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah stressed that the movement had contributed much, and said all Malaysians should be allowed to express themselves in the Bersih 5 rally, regardless of race.

Kluang MP Liew Chin Tong said the opposition walked out because the prime minister kept taking potshots at them in his speech.

Human Rights Commission Suhakam's budget will be doubled under Budget 2017, after suffering heavy cuts in the last budget.
