Dr M leaves Parliament with a heavy heart

Existential Turd: For a long time, Dr Mahathir Mohamad was part of, nay, the core of Umno. So are many of the Bersatu Umno rejects. They are too entwined with Umno's culture and history.

They cannot seriously bring down Umno and PM Najib Razak without implicating themselves. That is why they are just sniping at the edges. That is why their sincerity towards reforms appear half-hearted.

If Umno goes down, they will go with it. None of them are prepared to make that kind of sacrifice. They are still more worried for their own future than the country's future.

Anonymous Hotplate: All good-thinking Malaysians should forgive this 'old man'. After 13 years, he has repented and is trying his best to help Malaysians to put this beautiful nation which he agrees he had spoiled back together again.

It is not easy for an old man of more than 90 years old to join opposition parties to save the nation from his own regime. We believe he has genuinely repented and is doing what he should before he dies.

Please Umno-BN leaders, all MPs and the people, especially youngsters and 'kampung' Malays, join him in this good cause to save our nation.

Fairplayer: If Mahathir really repents from all the wrongs he had done to Malaysia, he definitely has to right all those wrongs while he still can.

Hopefully, he can still "steer" the country from the edge of total destruction and get parliamentary democracy restored to its original position as at MA63 (Malaysia Agreement 1963).

Hank Marvin: He used to undermine Parliament when he was PM but at least he now does something to strengthen it back.

Clever Voter: There is no denying that Mahathir was ruthless and often autocratic in his management style when he led the government. But he probably had not expected the unintended consequences.

To begin with, he could have inculcated a culture of meritocracy. He could have been more inclusive given the country’s rich diversity of resources. He should have listened to opposing views that creating a dependency system is not sustainable.

The strategy of using religion is also an ill-conceived one. More importantly, he could have ensured the system is well-locked up with less power being concentrated with the PM. And he chose to remove independence of judiciary.

On reflection, much has to be done. To do so, he must accept beyond the modern buildings and highways lies a culture of greed, lies and cheats. Corruption ultimately will destroy all. But Mahathir cannot do it alone. He needs help.

Anticonmen: True democracy is equality, freedom, fraternity, separation of powers and independence of the institutions.

How pathetic - a person who did not grasp or practise the tenets of true democracy when in power, lamenting about the lack of democracy in Parliament.

The Power of The Dream: Let us not try to retrace Mahathir’s past strange journey of successes and failures, but to appreciate his solid effort now as the invincible old man to slay the allegedly corrupted MO1.

It is a big sum, and if 1MDB could not escape international scrutiny, surely, this money could not be given without anyone knowing about it, right?

How come red shirts leader Jamal Md Yunos is so thick-skinned that he is willing to parade his stupidity for all to see, including the international community?

FairMind: Gerakan Youth chief Tan Keng Liang is contradicting himself. On one hand, he is saying the donation is so measly cheap amounting to only RM3 million a year.

If the donation is so measly cheap, then how can it influence or topple the mighty BN government as Jamal and his cohorts had claimed?

Is Tan trying to imply that only big donations like the RM2.6 billion that his boss got is admirable? It is business as usual for BN components - shooting their own foot as well as shooting one another's foot.

Flower8888: Whatever it is, I agree with Tan that Malaysia must remember what Soros did last time and almost destroyed our country's currency. This is something Marina should not have ignored.

Yes, we remember Soros. And yes, I agree with Tan that it is wrong to support people like Soros. But is it right to support people like Najib?
