Maria in solitary confinement

Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah, who was arrested last Friday, was not among the eight released yesterday. According to her lawyer Ambiga Sreenevasan, Maria is being detained in solitary confinement under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma).

Police have secured a two-day remand order to further detain Bersih steering committee member Hishamuddin Rais, Batu MP Tian Chua, Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin, Seremban MP Anthony Loke and Pasir Pinji assemblyperson Howard Lee.

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man condemned Putrajaya for applying Sosma, earmarked for terrorists, to detain Maria, describing it as "excessive".

The Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) insists that Bersih 5 gathnering and the red-shirt counter rally are 'legal' and said that there was no justification for the arrests of the key organisers of the Bersih rally.

Zahid passes the buck

Asked about the use of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) against Bersih chief Maria Chin Abdullah, Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi passed the buck to the attorney-general and the inspector-general of police.

Zahid, who is also Umno acting deputy president, said he would propose amendments to the party constitution to make his post official. He said that although there have been three occasions when a party deputy president was removed from office, the Umno constitution is silent on what to do in the circumstances.

Bersih derided

The majority of protesters at Bersih 5 were Chinese, hence proving that former PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his allies had little traction with Malays, said Utusan Malaysia, labelling the rally as a lukewarm affair.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak claimed he finds that Malaysians have become fed-up with the Bersih electoral reform group or feel that its rallies do not bring any benefit to the country.

Malay rights pressure group Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali stressed that the movement is not anti-Chinese, and is only anti-DAP over the socialist democratic party's chauvinist attitude.

Traders around the city centre who claimed to have suffered losses due to the Bersih 5 rally yesterday should file their claims against Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), Bersih treasurer Thomas Fann said, as it was City Hall that ordered them to close shop during the rally, resulting in their loss of business.

Two fishermen are feared to have been abducted in the Merabung waters near Lahad Datu last Saturday, one believed to be a skipper and the other a crew member. They were apparently kidnapped about 7.30pm, while fishing in the waters.

Maria's family will lodge a police report at the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters on alleged elements of torture during her Sosma detention.
