Artist Sharon Chin has launched an art campaign calling for the release of Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah, who is held under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012.

The campaign 'One Artwork A Day Until Maria is Released' features Bersih-themed artwork documenting and discussing the crackdown against Bersih.

"You are welcome to take part in 'One Artwork A Day Until Maria is Released' challenge. Drawings, songs, poems, fiction, concept art, performance, photos, anything," she said on her website.

She urged participating artists to upload their work online with the the hashtags #bebasMaria #MansuhSOSMA and #Art4Maria.

The first in the series is a sketch for an interactive art installation where the audience is invited to enter a 15 x 8 feet area mimicking Maria's detention conditions.

Two torchlights will symbolise the light which is constantly turned on in Maria's cell while two placards will list the the conditions of the activist's cell.

The audience will be allowed in one person at a time.

"Let people experience with their own bodies the condition of solitary confinement," Sharon said.

Activist Pang Khee Teik is also urging art workers to be involved in a campaign to demand for Maria's release.

"Attention art workers who want to be involved with the #BebasMaria campaign.

"We are looking for artists, writers, performers, filmmakers, theatre-makers, singer-songwriters, etc. PM me," he wrote, urging artists to send him a private message via Facebook.

Artist Charis Loke also released a series called 'Bunga Bantahan' (Protest Flowers), which are available for download.

"Long live the people!" Loke said on Twitter.

One features a yellow chrysanthemum while another features a hibiscus trampled underfoot, with the words 'Bebas Maria, Mansuh Sosma'.

The latest by Penang-based Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic, famed for his murals in George Town, called 'Rage Against The Machine' is also tagged as Bersih 5 Art by the Malaysia Design Archive.

The mural at Jalan Sultan, Kuala Lumpur features schoolchildren revolting against a school bus.

Prior to the rally, artist Fahmi Reza, who was also arrested in the Bersih crackdown, released multiple protest posters for download.

His latest is a caricature of Maria with an upheld fist, with the words 'Bebas Maria'.

The poster has been seen at the nightly vigils held in Kuala Lumpur demanding for Maria's release.
