Am I not Malay enough?

Swipenter: Nowadays no Malay is ‘Malay enough’ unless you are an Umno Malay and lately a PAS Malay. Now even a constitutionally-defined Malay is not as safe as before. Ask the doctor in the house. He should know better than us.

Certain categories of newly-arrived ‘pendatangs’ can also be ‘Malay enough’. It all depends.

Ridiculous but true that what makes you ‘Malay enough’ is fluid depending on time and circumstances, not to forget your political allegiance and faith.

How prevalent are Malay children brought up to think that a kafir's way of life is going to earn them a place in hell? That reality is sure scary and dangerous.

Now one can understand why some of them insist on exclusivity, and rejecting pluralism and diversity.

Proarte: Writer Zan Azlee, why the need to define yourself as Malay when you are clearly not 'pure' Malay, assuming there is such a thing?

Even if you regard yourself as Malay, equally, you could call yourself a Chinese by the same criteria you use to call yourself a Malay, by virtue of your Chinese roots and the fact that you speak Cantonese and celebrate Chinese New Year.

EmEmKay: As a senior citizen, I was looking forward to the year 2020 because by then we are all supposed to be Malaysians based on the concept of Vision 2020.

I remember very well when our then-PM read out Vision 2020 and the core words that I learnt by heart are as follows:

“By the year 2020, Malaysia can be a united nation, with a confident Malaysian society. The first of these is the challenge of establishing a united Malaysian nation with a sense of common and shared destiny.

“This must be a nation at peace with itself, territorially, and ethnically integrated, living in harmony and full and fair partnership, made up of one 'Bangsa Malaysia' with political loyalty and dedication to the nation.”

But all of a sudden, the National Transformation 2050 (TN50) has hijacked the Vision 2020.

SusahKes: In 2005, Malaysian Official 1 (MO1) coined the term ‘Glocal Malays’ - here, read it for yourself.

Quote - "He outlined five measures to be implemented by Umno towards generating this race of Malays.

“These are: Education and knowledge; Economic activities; Appreciation of religious values; Strengthening their resilience through cultural transformation; Strengthening Malay politics based on idealism of struggle."

Now tell me, just how successful have MO1 and Umno been since 2005? Moral of the story? Don't hold your breath for Umno's ‘Fantasy Island’ version of a trillion-dollar entrepreneur who flies home regularly to shower mommy and the poor with his love.

There may not even be a planet Earth come 2045 at the rate our resources are being depleted by the greedy humanity (of course, Umno might still be on top of the food chain, even then, I wouldn't be surprised if they end up privatising the supply of fresh air and sunlight).

Truth be told however - Firdaus 2050 might instead turn out to be a current-day version of Philippine labour export at the rate things are being managed.

I certainly do not wish for it, but I'd also rather not bury my head in the sand.

Responsible Malaysian: The greed for power and control by politicians for illegal gains are the drive to force Malaysians to be divided. The tools used are race and religion.

Whether you like it or not, a certain race is to practice a certain religion and hence be bound by the rules set up by their leaders. If you disagree, you will be penalised.

Other races fall into the trap and start to condemn the particular race and religion. They forget that this scenario is exactly what the devils want to see. Hence, divide and rule succeeds.

If the government frees everyone to practice what they want as individuals, then no one will be threatened. Then everyone will have the same goal of achieving a corruption-free and an advanced nation.

Drngsc: Dear Muslim friends, let us not be divided by race and religion like some politicians (who are bankrupt of ideas) want us to be. Let us rise up and build a Malaysia for all Malaysians.

Tolerant and respecting all cultures and religion, we are all Malaysians.

Abasir: The Firdaus of 2050 as depicted by the ‘Higher’ Education Ministry missed out on a couple of details.

He will be producing the sequel to ‘The Wolves of Wall Street’ with even more utterances of the ‘F’ word than the original produced by one Riza Aziz.

He will be doing so with money ‘gifted’ to him by shady white-robed people from arid lands. And he will be seen at all parties where Cristal (champagne) will flow, and he will be always under the protection of a certain political party.

Clearwater: Not to worry, Zan. The real Firdaus will have problems even surviving past the year 2020 so Firdaus 2050 is purely a fictional character that offers no direct competition.

And you appear Malaysian enough to me, that's what counts.

Sleepy: Your last paragraph says it all. "You are Malaysian if you are Malaysian. That is all." Religion should not be a factor in this equation called ‘Malaysian’.
