Selangor State Legislative Assembly Speaker Hannah Yeoh has dismissed suggestions that she had compromised her position by rebutting MCA on the state's policies.

Yeoh said that as speaker, she had worked towards empowering the opposition by offering them the chair of the Public Accounts Committee.

"(We empowered the opposition) by establishing opposition leader's time, checking on the executive and holding them accountable.

"No one else does it better than Selangor," Yeoh said in a statement today.

This comes after several political observers stated that it was inappropriate for Yeoh to weigh in on Selangor MCA's criticism of the state's guidelines for new non-Muslim places of worship.

They claimed that Yeoh had compromised her impartiality and that Pakatan Harapan's speakers need to hold themselves to higher standards than BN.

Wearing two hats

However, Yeoh said she had a right to comment as vice-chairperson of Selangor DAP and Subang Jaya assemblyperson.

"I was tasked with studying and comparing these guidelines with other states.

"As a lawmaker, elected by the people, I have a duty to tell the truth - that these guidelines exist in other states," she said.

Also responding to this issue, Selangor DAP chief Tony Pua said Yeoh had excelled in her duties as an impartial speaker and has given more room to the opposition in the Selangor state assembly.

"But outside of performing her duties as a speaker of the state assembly, she is still an elected representative of her voters and the people of Selangor.

"When she hears valid concerns and grouses from the rakyat, and she certainly did in this issue, she has every right to speak up to right the wrong," Pua said.
