Political cartoonist Zunar will be back in Penang for a cartoon exhibition featuring 50 of his artworks, despite the possibility of his event being disrupted again.

The exhibition, titled "Ketawa Pink Pink", is to be held in two sessions. An indoor exhibition will first be held on Jul 29 at the Whiteaways Arcade, Beach Street, while on Jul 30, fans can catch Zunar in an open-space concept in the same area as part of Project Occupy Beach Street.

Zunar, whose real name is Zulkiflee Anwar Ulhaque, said he needs to get his work done, although his previous exhibition in Penang, which was held in Komtar last October, was attacked by members of the state Umno youth wing.

"There may be samseng (gangsters) around, but you need to continue doing your job," Zunar told Malaysiakini.

Despite the attack, which forced him to abort his exhibition, Zunar was also arrested under the Sedition Act 1948 for allegedly insulting the country's top leaders.

10 large prints of his cartoons, which had been mounted on steel frames which cost about RM1,500 each, were seized by police.

Asked about the possibility of being arrested again, an unfazed Zunar replied, "I just concentrate on what I am supposed to do".

"I choose not to think about what the police or the government want to do," he quipped.

His cartoons, which focus on lampooning Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor, touch on sensitive issues like the 1MDB scandal.

But Zunar said he is not out to create trouble with anyone or any party.

He said the purpose of his exhibitions, deemed controversial to many, is to raise public awareness of current issues, especially about corruption.

"More importantly, it is to raise awareness on the connection between corruption and how it affects people's daily lives," he said.

"It is a duty for the cartoonist to provide this information through cartoons," he added.

"Talent is not a gift; talent is a responsibility."

On Dec 17 last year, Zunar was arrested for allegedly conducting activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy, and 1,300 copies of his cartoon books were confiscated.

Zunar has been banned from travelling abroad since October last year. He is challenging the government's decision in court.

In April 2015, Zunar was slapped with nine charges under the archaic Sedition Act 1948, for which he faces a possible total of 43 years imprisonment if convicted simultaneously for all charges.

"My office has been raided several times, my webmaster has been arrested, the printers who print my books were also raided, and nine of my cartoons books are banned," he said, seemingly undeterred by the many challenges.

Zunar visited Penang most recently in June to launch his cartoon collection, titled “Twit-Twit, Cin Cin”.
