MACC goes after S'gor varsity; forex RCI's hasty conclusion questioned

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

MACC goes after S'gor state university

Anti-corruption agency MACC raided Universiti Selangor (Unisel) and the Menteri Besar Incorporated (MBI) over compensations made to a company despite allegedly not fulfilling its contractual obligations.

MACC advisory board member Mohd Noor Abdullah said reports made to MACC must be kept confidential in response to leaks that RM2 million belonging to Penang exco Phee Boon Poh was frozen, a claim the latter denied.

Mohd Noor also said the MACC should avoid forcing detainees to wear lock-up attire during remand proceedings as happened to former Felda Global Ventures Holdings (FGV) chairperson Isa Samad.

Former deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin said he could not recall whether he was present during the National Economic Council meetings which approved the controversial purchases made by Felda which was now a subject of MACC investigations.

MCA deputy president Wee Ka Siong accused DAP of hypocrisy in taking up environmental issues but turned a blind eye to pollution by illegal factories in Penang.

Phee made public minutes of a meeting of the Seberang Perai Municipal Council which revealed that representative of the Department of Environment found that the illegal factory in Sungai Lembu did not cause pollution.

Forex RCI's hasty conclusion questioned

PKR lawyer R Sivarasa said then finance minister Anwar Ibrahim had briefed Parliament about the forex scandal in 1993, a year before then deputy Bank Negara assistant governor Abdul Murad Khalid briefed Anwar about the matter.

Murad had earlier testified at the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on the forex scandal, claiming that Anwar said he would have to resign as finance minister if the amount of losses was made public.

Former minister Zaid Ibrahim sarcastically suggested that the forex RCI could have concluded its investigation in just three days after the commission declared the losses suffered amounted to RM31.5 billion on the very first day of the hearing.

Amid calls for an RCI into the Memali tragedy, DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang and former inspector-general of police Abdul Rahim Noor claimed it will implicate PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang for fanning religious sentiment that resulted in the clash between villagers and police.

PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad rebutted this and referred to Rahim's assault of Anwar Ibrahim in 1998 as an example of the police's alleged tendency for violence.

1MDB filed an application to strike out former senator Ezam Mohd Noor's suit to recover US$3.66 billion of 1MDB funds that were allegedly misappropriated.

Najib's oil price dilemma

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak lamented at being attacked when oil prices go up but falling oil prices were met with silence, pointing out that he had no power to control them.

Najib said this during an awards ceremony for village chiefs across the nation, where he presented RM1.6 million in prize money and project funding to top villages.

He urged the village chiefs to foster football-like teamwork ahead of the 14th general election.

Shahaimi Othman, who leads the Association of Village Chiefs, urged his peers across the country to attack former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's "lies" against the government.

Bersatu denied rumours that Mahathir was admitted to Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after allegedly suffering breathing difficulties.
