IGP: Loss of CIMB data due to negligence, not sabotage

The loss of CIMB back-up data tapes on Nov 13 was due to negligence on the part of the bank’s staff and had no elements of sabotage, said inspector-general of police Mohamad Fuzi Harun.

He said the bank lodged a report on the lost tapes on the day of the incident at the Seapark Police Station in Petaling Jaya, and that an investigation was being carried out under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft.

“The issue is an internal problem of CIMB, and they have taken the necessary security measures and will issue a statement on it.

“If they need police help, we will help and the case will be investigated by the Commercial Crimes Department, Bukit Aman,” he told a press conference after the closing ceremony of a gathering of civilian staff of the Royal Malaysia Police at the PDRM College in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur.

Last Tuesday, CIMB Group Holdings Bhd were reported to have intensified its security measures in all its outlets, after several magnetic tapes containing back-up data were lost during a data transaction.

However, CIMB Group has clarified that the tapes did not contain any personal information, such as the personal identification numbers, passwords or card verification value numbers.
