Selangor Umno will organise a gathering in support of the state's ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

Dubbed “himpunan rakyat”, the gathering is in response to former law minister Zaid Ibrahim's remarks regarding the ruler's warning that Dr Mahathir Mohamad's anger could raze the nation.

According to Selangor Umno liaison committee chairperson Noh Omar, the rally would be held outside the palace in Shah Alam on Sunday.

"Zaid's statement shows he is an outdated leader," he said.

"Zaid's statement is not only stupid and insolent, he has 'derhaka' (committed treason) against the sultan," he told reporters at the sidelines of the Umno general assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon.

Noh also urged the people of Selangor to attend the gathering and express support for their ruler.

Tweeting a Malaysiakini article which reported the ruler as warning that Mahathir's anger could raze the nation, Zaid had said: "Sultan Selangor should be careful with his words. No one is immune when the country burns."

“When some rulers play politics; they must know the consequences. Don't think there’s no price for partisanship,” he added.

'Probe Zahid under Sedition Act'

Meanwhile, Noh said a police report would also be lodged urging for action to be taken against Zaid under the Sedition Act.

The Umno leader said Zaid should have asked Mahathir to apologise to the sultan for his “Bugis pirate” remark which prompted the ruler to train his guns on the former premier.

"The same goes for the (Selangor) menteri besar (Azmin Ali). I see that his respect is more for Mahathir instead of the sultan," he added.

Noh said the Selangor state government should express firm support for the ruler.

"Azmin was appointed by the sultan and not DAP. The state government should come out with a motion not to allow Mahathir to give ceramah at the state government's premises.

"As menteri besar, he must realise that the one who is protecting us is the sultan, not Mahathir or DAP. I'm disappointed that the menteri besar takes it lightly when it comes to defending the sultan," he added.

In an exclusive interview with the Star, Sultan Sarafuddin had rained criticism on Mahathir, describing the nonagenarian as “dangerous,” possessing “deep hatred within him”, suffering from an “inferiority complex”, someone who never lets others outdo him and never apologises.

The sultan also denied that the rulers were exacting revenge on Mahathir for limiting their powers when he was prime minister.

Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar had also rebuked Mahathir for his “Bugis pirate” remark.

The former premier claimed that he was referring to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and not the entire Bugis community.
