Two DAP veterans have given up their party positions to make way for new recruit and former UKM lecturer Prof P Ramasamy, who joined the party on Sept 8.

The decision was approved at a central executive committee (CEC) meeting last night, when International Secretary Ronnie Liu and CEC member S Sivanesan withdrew from their respective posts.

Ramasamy's appointments as CEC member and international secretary take effect immediately.

According to a statement by DAP secretary general Lim Guan Eng, Liu remains a CEC member and will continue to head the NGO affairs bureau.

Sivanesan will serve in a non-executive capacity and lead the DAP national labour bureau.

Recognise experience

Contacted today, Ramasamy said he believed that he was considered for the positions because of his experience and expertise.

"The DAP wanted to recognise my experience of 25 years especially in peace negotiations. They believe the marriage will be rewarded," he said.

The former labour rights activist turned political science professor, is considered an international expert on the separatist movement in Sri Lanka. He was also involved in the Aceh peace talks.

Ramasamy said he would continue with his academic work, as it would complement his political role.

"I am retired and getting a pension. I don't expect material rewards by joining the DAP," he said.

In July, UKM terminated Ramasamy's contract under controversial circumstances. He then joined DAP, citing 'mutual interest' as the reason.
