Floods force closure of 20 schools in four states

Eleven schools in Pahang and three in Sarawak had to postpone their first day of the new school year today due to floods.

Three schools in Kelantan and as many in Terengganu, which began their new school year yesterday, had to close today due to floods as well.

Pahang acting director of education Tajuddin Mohd Yunus said nine of the 11 schools in Pahang were in the Kuantan district, and one each in Pekan and Jerantut.

He said these schools were given emergency leave for security reasons while the teachers were advised to report to the nearest schools.

Pahang has 195 secondary schools with over 110,000 students, and 540 primary schools with 150,000 pupils.

The Education Ministry recorded 4.7 million pupils and students entering Year One to Form Five for the 2018 school year.

In Sarawak, a school in Belaga and two in Subis were closed due to floods while three schools were closed in Kelantan, in the Tanah Merah district.

The three schools closed in Terengganu involved two in Dungun and one in Kemaman.

Meanwhile, all schools in the federal territory of Putrajaya no longer implemented the class streaming system according to the level of academic proficiency.

Putrajaya director of education Roaini Jaafar said the concept was welcomed by parents because students were no longer separated for academic achievement but were combined in the same class in the process of teaching and learning in the 21st century. This was being carried out in 14 national schools and 26 secondary schools.

In Selangor, 91,656 children entered Year One. Altogether, 924,868 children began the new school year today throughout Selangor.

In Negeri Sembilan, 169,345 children from Year One to Form Five started their first day of school in the new year while in Perlis, 3,882 children reported for entry into Year One.

Perak recorded 32,774 Year One pupils and 34,817 Form One students on the first day of the new school year.

Sabah registered 45,558 Year One pupils and 46,128 Form One students.
