Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali today said that the issue of holding early state polls is "irrelevant" at this juncture with only a few months left before Parliament would be automatically dissolved.

"I am of the view that this issue is no longer relevant because the term would end in a few months.

"And, for sure, the proposal is illogical because it would create uncertainties among the rakyat, on the need to hold state polls now," Azmin told reporters after a meet-the-people session at Masjid Zakaria in Gombak.

Azmin said this in response to a reported proposal by political analyst Wong Chin Huat that it would be a "smart move" by the Selangor government to dissolve the state assembly ahead of the 14th general election.

In making the proposal, Wong said such a move could potentially ward off the effects of the redelineation of electoral boundaries which critics had said would be in favour of BN. 

Meanwhile, Azmin (photo) further said that calling for early state polls would incur a high cost at the expense of the people.

"If this proposal was made one year ago, maybe we can discuss it.

"But in the current situation of this term being set to expire soon, I don't see the rationale to hold early polls," said Azmin who is also Selangor Harapan and Selangor PKR chief.

"Now we are only focused on increasing our services for the people and to resolve their problems," he added.

Selangor Amanah chief Izham Hashim had yesterday told Malaysiakini that he would raise the question of whether to hold snap polls at the next state Harapan meeting.

While he concurred that snap polls could give Harapan an advantage, Izham also cautioned there were possible downsides, including how BN could focus their entire electoral machinery in Selangor.

Selangor has been battling the redelineation exercise in court on the grounds that it was affected by the redrawing of electoral boundaries, which Harapan claimed would result in severe voter malapportionment and gerrymandering.
